Beyond Booked Solid: Your Business, Your Life, Your Way 's AllInside

Ebook Download | Beyond Booked Solid: Your Business, Your Life, Your Way - It's All Inside | Michael Port's first book, Book Yourself Solid, was a terrific book. His latest is even better. There is so much to like about this book. It is refreshing to see an author stretch himself by writing a sequel that is a real extension to the predecessor. So many authors churn out books regurgitating that they have previously said. This book truly goes "beyond" his earlier book. Kudos, Michael Port, for being a true sequel writer.
A second strength is the very thoughtful order in which this new material is presented. The table of contents alone has great value as a checklist for business success. And, the case studies placed at the end to reinforce the learning points presented in the book was a great idea.
A third strength is the beautiful balance between sound business advice and worthwhile personal advice. As one that so believes the quality of one's business is a reflection of the quality of one's life, the author is to be congratulated for bridging the gap between business and personal attitude. A fourth strength is the quality of the advice offered. Having spent 25+ years as a business consultant, I am frequently appalled at the quality of advice given in books aimed at the same market as this one. I found not one point that I would debate in the 200 pages. Not a single one. I could go on and on. But, suffice it to say that I strongly recommend this book as a foundational philosophy for any entrepreneur, as well as for professionals in the large professional service organizations (e.g., law firms, accounting firms, etc.). Although the book was seemingly not targeted for the latter group, I believe that professionals in large firms could benefit by adopting Port's philosophies.

Values-Centered Entrepreneurs and Their Companies

Ebook Download | Values-Centered Entrepreneurs and Their Companies | Many people think of Social Responsibility as corporations giving to some organization like CarbonFund.org or some small charity. However, this book brilliantly illustrates that there are thousands of ways that organizations small and large can systemically utilize the resources of the firm to give back in a synergistic manner that actually enables the mission of the firm.
It's an easy read, has loads of examples, and is informative. This book constantly igniting new ideas as I went through it - most of which are in the process of being implemented at the company. One of the first initiatives that we undertook was diverting a % of revenue into a fund that is managed by the employees. Our team is predominately women & middle-aged who aren't the best at technology. We needed to implement a new accounting tool to track profitability / account. However, we wanted clients to know that their expenses are going to help a charity, so the team ACTUALLY adopted the technology solution because they WANTED to tell the clients how much time & how many $$ we gave to this particular charity.
This book was the genesis for this new initiative and we are giving copies to clients. We have talked about terminating existing relationships with clients who are not at least talking about ways to be socially responsible at some level in their businesses.

Economics: Principles & Practices

Ebook Download | Economics: Principles & Practices | The recent publication date of this book allows for greater understanding for today's youth. Being part of a summer school class, I was among the first people in my high school to evaluate the book for the regular school year. Key concepts in this book are efficiently shown, and all the basic principles of economics (supply & demand, business types) are outlined very nicely. Although our school did not partake in it, the book also comes with a set of interactive CD's, allowing the instructor to visually show the effects of economics on daily life. There are an amazing number of brightly-colored graphs and pictures to demonstrate the book's main points. This text was extremely successful in helping me gain an appreciation for the backbone of our nation's economic standing.

Kostas Iatrou, "Airline Choices for the Future"

Ebook Download | Kostas Iatrou, "Airline Choices for the Future" | This is a very good book for both industry professionals as well as students looking to dive into the complex business of the airline industry. Given the various web of regulation surrounding the industry, this text presents a constructed illustration of what is to come, based on historic market moves, along with what are the most probable scenarios for the industry. With the global alliances growing like hot cakes its hard to follow which airline is where these days; reading the true fundamental reasonings behind airline executive's motivation to join a unique alliance will help the reader understand the value proposition, from various cases, where alliances are the true future "virtual merger" alternative for traditional mergers, which in today's geo-political environment will unlikely create a successful global airline.

The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the NewCorporate World

Ebook Download | The Lords of Strategy: The Secret Intellectual History of the New Corporate World | This is the most interesting book on strategy that I have read, because it tells the story of the individuals and consulting firms who created the strategy concepts and tools which revolutionised corporations around the world towards the end of the 20th century. The idiosyncrasies of brilliant strategists are described, as are their struggles to have their ideas accepted. The author's personal knowledge of the major players makes the narrative more compelling.
The author even-handedly discusses both the good points and the bad points of the various strategic ideas, but on the whole he is an admirer of the lords of strategy and tends to exonerate them from blame for the mess the world now finds itself in, whereas others might be inclined to accuse them of encouraging companies to undertake unwise levels of risk in order to maximise short-term shareholder returns. I found some parts of the book a bit dry, but for the most part it was highly engaging.

Richard Templar - The rules of work: A definitive code for personalsuccess

Ebook Download | Richard Templar - The rules of work: A definitive code for personal success | The format of the book The Rules of Work is nicely laid out and the flow from the first rule to the last makes common sense. You build one habit on top of the other to fashion yourself into a professional level employee. After all, how can anyone really argue against presenting a clean and polished appearance?
This is a good basic book of rules for most professional areas of work. It might not apply at Google as another reviewer mentioned, but we can't all work at Google, and this provides guidelines for getting ahead where we do.

Stop Acting Rich: How to Live Like a Real Millionaire

Ebook Download | Stop Acting Rich: How to Live Like a Real Millionaire | I read Thomas Stanley's The Millionaire Next Door three years ago and was thoroughly impressed by the insights and research. While reading it I wished the author had published a revised edition with updated numbers - the book was published in 1998. This book (Stop Acting Rich...) covers similar themes as the book I previously mentioned. However, it has updated numbers and includes insights gained from the financial crises of 2008-2009.
The central theme of this book is that there is a difference between those that are genuinely rich and those that act like they are rich. This book details the differences between these two groups of people - what they wear, drive, eat, drink, etc. These differences, presented throughout the book in the form of several tables and lists, are backed by empirical data that are drawn from the author's extensive research on the affluent.During the financial crisis of 2008-2009, many articles were published regarding the benefits of frugality and the dangers of excessive consumption. In many ways the root of this crisis (sometimes referred to as the Credit Crisis) was excessive borrowing and consumption. I share the author's belief that as soon as the economy improves, people will resume their spendthrift ways. This is most unfortunate since it could lead to a repeat of the crisis we just experienced.
Bottom line - I highly recommend this book as the single best personal finance book I have read. You cannot save the whole of society from this disease of hyperconsumerism. But by educating yourself, you can simplify your lifestyle so that you can be truly rich as opposed to just acting like you are rich. If my review was helpful to you, I request you to select "Yes" so that the rating is improved and more readers will get to read it.

Leadership Chronicles of a Corporate Sage: Five Keys to Becoming a MoreEffective Leader

Ebook Download | Leadership Chronicles of a Corporate Sage: Five Keys to Becoming a More Effective Leader | This is one of the best books on coaching I have read. It is remarkably substantive, yet concise and exceptionally readable....a diamond in the rough field of coaching books. Bethanis has deftly illustrated both the art and science of the leadership development process. She offers some key aspects and tools for leadership development, and makes an important link between vision/strategic focus and real-time coaching. The last time I got something so substantive out of a coaching book (there are certainly other places for wisdom!) was from James Flaherty's Coaching: Evoking Excellence in Others. And, due to his impressive intellect, hip-waders are useful for traversing its conceptual rapids. The simplicity of Corporate Sage makes it all the more profound. This book is time well spent for coaches and executives alike.

Think Like Your Customer

Ebook Download | Think Like Your Customer | Whether you are rookie sales person trying to get ahead, or a veteran sales person looking for some fresh ideas on how to grow your business, this is the book for you. Bill Stinnett has really raised the bar on sales books in my opinion and provides easy to understand strategies and techniques for becoming a valuable partner with your customers.
Think Like Your Customer gives easy to understand processes and strategies for outselling your competition and becoming an invaluable asset to your customers. Unlike most books which share only cute strategies on getting a customer to say "yes," Think Like Your Customer spells out specific strategies on developing value and goodwill towards your prospects and customers. Each transaction must be mutually beneficial for both the customer and your company and often times many sales people forget this. Bill points out the extreme long-term value of developing this kind of approach and ultimately this kind of relationship with the customer and how it pays off in real dollar opportunity for you and your company.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone that is looking for that edge over competition and wants to truly develop a long lasting relationship with their customers. It is a book that is jam packed full of excellent information that will have the mind racing and your heart pounding to get out there and get to work. It is a book that I know I will be returning to over and over again for both inspiration and motivation.
I would say without a doubt this is a must read for anyone in the selling profession!

We highly recommend this book to leaders who want to learn how to build a climate of cooperation rather than of conflict.

The Oil Factor: Protect Yourself and Profit from the Coming EnergyCrisis

Ebook Download | The Oil Factor: Protect Yourself and Profit from the Coming Energy Crisis | This is an unusually lucid guide for investors with the focus on the price of oil as the key economic indicator. This book is the trade paperback edition of the original hardcover book copyrighted in 2004. This is essentially the same book that Stephen and Donna Leeb wrote in 2002, but with a new introduction. The reason for this edition is that the Leebs were especially prescient in their predictions. Oil has shot up to over sixty dollars a barrel, and inflation is on the rise while the Fed has continued to raise interest rates in an attempt to slow things down. Prognosticators that are right tend to gain readers. Bottom line: very much worth reading for the authors' lucid explanation of why they (and most other experts, by the way, that I have read) think will be the shape of our near-term economic future and what you the individual investor can do about it.
