Windows Server 2008: The Definitive Guide

Ebook Download | Windows Server 2008: The Definitive Guide | This book is written for the IT PRO, not someone looking to learn Active Directory or other services in Windows Server 2008 hoping to pass a paper cert test. It's assumed you have a broad understanding of Microsoft's culture and product lines and are looking for a practical review of technologies in 2008.
You don't have to be a AD guru to get a lot out of this book either. I would actually recommend it above Microsoft Press books, because instead of trying to indoctrinate you on a set of "standards" Hassell simply gives you a working set of parts under the hood. He doesn't get caught up on the politics or test taking.
I do not recommend this book as a project management guide to upgrading from 2003 to 2008. This isn't one of "those" books. Instead, it's a good book for someone exploring the idea and reasons for upgrading, by being exposed to what is inside 2008 Server first.

Richard Templar - The rules of work: A definitive code for personalsuccess

Ebook Download | Richard Templar - The rules of work: A definitive code for personal success | The format of the book The Rules of Work is nicely laid out and the flow from the first rule to the last makes common sense. You build one habit on top of the other to fashion yourself into a professional level employee. After all, how can anyone really argue against presenting a clean and polished appearance?
This is a good basic book of rules for most professional areas of work. It might not apply at Google as another reviewer mentioned, but we can't all work at Google, and this provides guidelines for getting ahead where we do.

Asterisk: The Definitive Guide

Ebook Download | Asterisk: The Definitive Guide | Whether you have a passing curiosity about Asterisk or your very livelihood depends upon it, this is THE one Asterisk book you MUST have on your shelf (or e-shelf).
Originally called "Asterisk, The Future of Telephony", the new title is more apropos. Not only is "the future of telephony" a present-day reality, but all earlier editions of this have unequivocally qualified as the de-facto definitive guides. The third edition welcomes contributions from brilliant Asterisk head engineer, co-author Russell Bryant.
Our venture capital fund uses Asterisk to bring efficiency to our our portfolio companies. When not wearing my CTO hat, I also use Asterisk personally to build "crazy powerful" and fun telephony solutions for myself and family. With the stunning versatility and power of Asterisk, it comes as no surprise that there are more Asterisk servers than all the Google and Facebook servers combined. Asterisk has grown up to be a major force in telecommunications, and 'Asterisk: The Definitive Guide' indeed lives up to its title.

Closure: The Definitive Guide

Ebook Download | Closure: The Definitive Guide | I read Closure: The Definitive Guide as part of O'Reilly's rough cuts program, and I can honestly say that the book is one of the best technical books I've read in quite some time. It's clear that the author sought to leave no stone unturned in writing this book; he succeeded brilliantly. His writing style is concise but not at all confusing, leading to a great book that lends itself just as well to sit-down reading as it does a reference guide.
This book is definitely targeted towards developers, not managers. You should have at least some experience with JavaScript and the DOM before reading this. The author thankfully doesn't rehash the basics of such material before digging into Closure, but he also doesn't make the assumption that you need to have written a book on JavaScript in order to understand how to use everything. After you read the introduction chapter, you can safely skip some parts and come back to them later as you begin to understand Closure's design patterns. I thoroughly read most chapters and just skimmed others, which was great because it let me get familiar with the material without getting bogged down in all the details present in such an immense SDK.
Closure is most likely overkill if you're just building one-off websites, but if you want to build something more, do yourself a favor and buy this book and read it. Don't sell yourself short. Otherwise you'll be doomed to blindly throwing jQuery, MooTools, Prototype, or the like onto your canvas and hoping it'll work just as well for your large app -- it won't. Soon after you begin developing with Closure and reading this book, you'll experience the joy and relief that only a proper JavaScript TOOLKIT can provide.
Overall, this is a really great book that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to any front-end developer who is tasked with building a web application that they want to be fast, browser-agnostic, and bug free.
