"MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-561): Microsoft .NET Framework3.5-ADO.NET Application Development"

Ebook Download | "MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-561): Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5-ADO.NET Application Development" | This revision of the book is phenomenal. Looking back on the prior edition for the .NET 3.5 ASP.NET certification exam, I recall feeling that the book left me prepared, but not completely. With that version, I recall several questions that left me guessing the correct answer and wondering why I'd not seen any reference to the topics in the book. In this revision, all those areas missing in the prior edition are addressed very specifically. Moreover, there was only one question on the exam that made me feel a topic area was not addressed - a significant improvement, though this is probably largely the result of the new topics added to this exam. In summary, this book is an excellent preparation guide for the Microsoft 70-515 exam. The content has been updated and reorganized from the previous version to address the new exam topics adn features for ASP.NET 4.0. I highly recommend this for anybody that would like to upgrade their skills, stay current, or simply find out about ASP.NET 4.0, MVC, and everything in-between.

Cloud Computing: Web-Based Applications That Change the Way You Workand Collaborate Online

Ebook Download | Cloud Computing: Web-Based Applications That Change the Way You Work and Collaborate Online | In the information technology world, the clouds keep rolling in. But this is hardly a cause for concern. These "clouds" are not threatening thunderheads but Web-based applications and services, accessible from any Internet connection. For instance, many businesses today use Salesforce for customer relationship management and many people use Gmail. In either case, users access these applications through a Web browser, such as Internet Explorer or Firefox. However, the users' data (customer names, e-mails and so on) isn't stored on their computers but "in the cloud," the technical term - or geek-speak - for "somewhere on the Internet." Some applications target the consumer, some target the business user and some target the software developer. Whoever the targeted users are, cloud-based applications and similar technologies are the next big trend in IT and getAbstract assures you that Michael Miller's brief, basic and very enthusiastic guide will help you understand them even if you are a novice. Sometimes it's useful to have your head in the clouds.

Cloud Computing with the Windows Azure Platform (Wrox Programmer toProgrammer)

Ebook Download | Cloud Computing with the Windows Azure Platform (Wrox Programmer to Programmer) | The author did a great job of introducing the Windows Azure platform and offer enough useful code samples. The first couple of chapters are introductions. Quickly, the chapters started with code samples that developers can use. What I liked the most is the code samples about interacting with Azure Tables and Blobs. For example, adding entities and download files chunks to MemoryStream. The author is evidently an experienced writer. He has done a great job in terms of topic selection, code samples, and presentation. If you are new to Windows Azure and would like to start working on it, this book can be a useful reference.
This book does not offer a comprehensive example of Azure application (from end to end). If you are experienced programmer or if you have someone on your team is, then you should be able to create your Azure application with some information covered in this book and supplemental information with your own research. Overall, I am pleased with this book's depth and coverage.

Michael Carroll, "Drifting on Alien Winds: Exploring the Skies andWeather of Other Worlds"

Ebook Download | Michael Carroll, "Drifting on Alien Winds: Exploring the Skies and Weather of Other Worlds" | What a wonderful way to surf the winds of other planets while learning mind-boggling facts about the zoo of atmospheres spread across our solar system. Without an atmosphere, our planet would be nearly or totally barren. It provides the oxygen we humans and all other animals must breathe, and the carbon dioxide all plants need to be able to grow. An atmosphere bombards us with dynamic weather, sometimes violent, sometimes beautiful, and so often awe-inspiring. The planets being discovered around other stars, the so-called exo-planets, are of very special interest when they have an atmosphere, but because they are so far away, it is the atmospheres within our own solar system which we can study well today.
Alien Winds captures all this in text and abundant space photographs, highlighted by numerous spectacular paintings by the author himself. There are no equations and no distracting excursions into the extremely tenuous "atmospheres" of Mercury or the moon. Instead, all the sensible atmospheres and their phenomena are described and explained in the clear, concise language we have come to expect from Carroll.
The book is organized by planet and moon, so that the reader may dive into a chapter or simply read bits of it at a time. Always captivating, the facts are enlivened by short interviews with leading planetary scientists to capture in their own words the science and excitement of their discoveries. Spacecraft missions - past, present and future - are described in overview style to reveal how these new discoveries have come about and how exploration will be done in the future. Nowhere else will you find such kaleidoscopic coverage of atmospheres, from the hell-hole of Venus to the blue orb of Neptune. The gas giants (Jupiter and Saturn) and ice giants (Uranus and Neptune) are described extensively.
Martian dust devils can be the prelude to periodic giant, globe-encircling dust storms. Yet, this vast desert may once have hosted a much thicker atmosphere which could have permitted large bodies of water to exist at the surface. In a simple diagram of the volcanic and tectonic cycles on Earth and Mars, Carroll shows how Mars' atmosphere may have dwindled inexorably to the sparse one we see today. Titan, which orbits around Saturn and is the largest moon in the solar system, has a spectacular atmosphere with abundant methane ("natural gas") and even lakes of methane ("liquefied natural gas"). With its low gravity and dense atmosphere, an airplane could fly at very low speeds on Titan, but to keep airborne in the much thinner martian atmosphere, it must fly with rocket power. The author not only clarifies these phenomena on alien worlds but explains how they relate to weather and climate on our own planet. In a time when the public has become more skeptical of the importance of climate change, these examples drive home the reality that atmospheres can evolve to very different states with profound consequences to the environment at the surface of the planet they encircle.
This book is a delight just for the fascinating facts in the text, but at the same time enlightens our understanding and intrigues our interest with the abundant colorful photos and art work.

The Best of Technology Writing 2007

Ebook Download | The Best of Technology Writing 2007 | Covering topics like crowd-sourcing, data prediction, driverless cars, virtual gaming environments, human powered vehicles, music analysis, network neutrality, digital film production, search data, crossword generators, online dating, and YouTube fame this collection collates many interesting and compelling essays on a variety of topics with a range of tones from humorous to philosophical. Of course, there's an obligatory piece from the Onion, but other good funny writing includes Phillip Smith's "The Worst Date Ever for an Apple Tech" and the dark, intriguing discussion of UrbanBaby.com entitled "Mothers Anonymous" by Emily Nussbaum. As for philosophy, Kevin Kelly's "Scan This Book!" makes a wonderful argument for freeing information whereas Clive Thompson's "A Head for Detail" reminds us that even though we can create a surrogate memory, we probably should avoid doing so unless we're willing to surf through a sea of metadata to find the memory we need. Finally, Jason Lanier's "Digital Maoism: the Hazards of the New Online Collectivism" should be required reading for anyone interested in the collision between information science and sociology. Overall, this essay collection (like the rest published annually by UM) serves as a great resource to discuss how new technological developments impact how we live, work, think, and feel.

Network Processors: Architecture, Programming, and Implementation

Ebook Download | Network Processors: Architecture, Programming, and Implementation | Every reader buys a book with different expectations and therefore I respect the points made by several other reviewers. For me however, this is one of the best books I've come across in the last decade. I've written two books myself and so I can be reasonably critical. At the same time, everyone has their unique preferences. For mine, this book is tremendous. The author clearly poured his heart into it-- it is one of the most comprehensive books on any subject I've come across. Several things make this book unique. First, the author provides his real perspectives and true opinions on network processors, vendors, approaches, what works, and what doesn't. His years of experience are reflected in the book. He also comments on the industry. He does these things without any pretense of political correctness-- he says it like he sees it. You'll also find him providing his views on deeper technical subjects. He's also perfectly happy to provide those views without giving you a treatise on everyone of the topics he comments on. I like that. He clearly set his sights on giving you as much information as he could in one book. Others may prefer more of a straight textbook like buildup of the material with no change from that theme and coverage only of topics that are built-up from scratch. There is however a large amount of buildup in the book, I just didn't buy it strictly for that. The book covers so much ground that in the 400+ pages the publisher had to reduce the font to keep the book size down. The book not only comments on particular example vendor implementations but also looks at architectural topics. He for example talks about the issues associated with software development environments and the economic tradeoffs an NPU vendor makes in investing in sample code versus a true software development environment. He covers deeper topics such as classification and also includes a chapter on security processors.

Grant's Dissector

Ebook Download | Grant's Dissector | I'm a med student and used this book for my gross anatomy lab and it was quite helpful. I did have to reference Netter's Atlas along with this to get a deeper understanding of the subject matter. However, I do recommend Grant's Dissector book because without it, I found that I was totally lost in my dissection lab. This book showed me more instruction on how to dissect then just listening to my lab instructor. For my gross anatomy exams , I also used the following which is on amazon: Spinal Anatomy Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This study guide helped me to prepare for the type of questions that were asked on the test. My friends told me about this book from another med school. In conclusion, I recommend the following for gross anatomy class: Grant's Dissector, Netter's Atlas, and Spinal Anatomy Study Guide:Key Review Questions and Answers

O. Richard Norton, Lawrence Chitwood, "Field Guide to Meteors andMeteorites"

Ebook Download | O. Richard Norton, Lawrence Chitwood, "Field Guide to Meteors and Meteorites" | This is a magnificent book and a must for anyone who is interested in our solar system and its formation. How do you study something that took place 4.6 billion years ago? You look at the unaltered debris that is left over from that period and fortunately for science that debris can be found on Earth in the form of meteorites. Once they are cut open, their extraterrestrial origins are betrayed and they become a history lesson to the scientists who study them. That's why this book is so important - it tells you what to look for, as most meteorites are found by amateurs - and it may as well be you. This is one of the very few areas where a non-scientist can make a real contribution to the scientific understanding of our planet's origins.
The book itself is divided into three parts. The first part is devoted to all the debris floating around the solar system, from interplanetary dust particles (IDPs), to asteroids, to meteoroids which become meteorites once they land on Earth. Meteors are the luminous phenomenon we have all witnessed in the night sky. Next comes the second and main part of the book with its description of the different classes and subclasses of meteorites, replete with color photos of whole specimens, slices, and thin sections. Every category of meteorites tells a different story that relates to the particulars of its formation. While most meteorites are of asteroidal origin, some have come from the Moon and Mars. These latter can send the heart racing if you are lucky enough to stumble upon one.
The final part of the book is about how to find meteorites and `what next?' if you think you have indeed stumbled upon one. Firstly, don't worry as they are neither hot to the touch nor are they radioactive. A gallery of `meteorwrongs' is included to show that a rock can look like a meteorite in some respects and yet sadly be terrestrial. A wonderful segment is included on what meteorites look like in thin section and it is a glorious world indeed. This is where former ugly-ducklings become superstars of science. Not everyone knows this, but you can actually buy these extraterrestrial rocks from space (just Google `meteorites for sale'). If you do, or if you wish to find you own, or if you just wish to learn more about the environment our Earth inhabits, you will want a copy of this outstanding book. The reader should be warned though - meteorites have been found to be highly addictive.

Dimitrios Kolymbas, "Tunnelling and Tunnel Mechanics: A RationalApproach to Tunnelling"

Ebook Download | Dimitrios Kolymbas, "Tunnelling and Tunnel Mechanics: A Rational Approach to Tunnelling" | I really liked the book for providing a good introduction into tunnelling, can't say a lot about the tunnel mechanics since I have no background in civil engineering. A mechanical engineer like me is given a concise overview of tunnelling and sheds some light on the problems encountered. Quite quickly one understands basic concepts such as tunnel alignment, ventilation or the way tunnel boring machines are built.

Justice Denied: What America Must Do to Protect its Children

Ebook Download | Justice Denied: What America Must Do to Protect its Children | Children had almost no personal rights through the middle ages. They were often punished as adults but had less perceived value than chattel. In our era we pride ourselves on our enlightened approach to childens' rights and welfare. If you believe we are truly enlightened this book will shatter that belief. Professor Hamilton describes the legal quirk whereby victims of child abuse are denied their day in court and perpetrating abusers are enabled by the law. The concept of the Statute of Limitations is designed to prevent miscarriages of justice yet in the case of child abuse it promotes them. Child abuse abvocates and victims have struggled for changes in State legislation to promote laws that are far more protective of children and their rights. The shocker is that the two institutions that have done the most to prevent enlightened legislation are the institutional Catholic Church, mostly the bishops, and the insurance industry. The Church is afraid to bare its secrets and lose its power (and money too) and the insurance industry blatantly puts its money way before the welfare of children. This book is solid. It is not a polemic. It is a painful and at times shocking revelation of well documented facts by a leading constitutional legal scholar and fearless advocate for the rights of children. Get the book. You'll be shocked, scandalized, angry and hopefully motivated to insist that your lawmakers do the right thing.

The New Handshake: Sales Meets Social Media

Ebook Download | The New Handshake: Sales Meets Social Media | I thought I was a semi-expert on social media. That was until I picked up a copy of the New Handshake: Sales Meets Social Media. This book will naturally appeal to corporate professionals and sales people who have not yet accepted what potential value Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin (to name a few) may add to their marketing arsenal. On the other hand, there are people like myself -- a Director of Marketing for a small business, a blogger since 2006 and one who's been comfortably Tweeting on behalf of nonprofits, businesses and my own personal agenda since Fall of '08. While I'm fairly comfortable (maybe too) with the branding and communication aspects of social media, reading The New Handshake is helping me to construct "a plan" to make the most of my creative messaging. The introduction alone reads like a well written tale on the history of sales. So, not only is The New Handshake a useful and educational tool for us marketeers, it's a page turner as well. I plan to buy at more copies as gifts for my fellow bloggers, social media-ites and biz buds who are always looking for new ways to advance their careers.

The American West at Risk: Science, Myths, and Politics of Land Abuseand Recovery

Ebook Download | The American West at Risk: Science, Myths, and Politics of Land Abuse and Recovery | This book is an ideal source book for environmental studies programs at the university level. It provides objective, largely dispassionate discussions of a broad range of human activities that have fundamentally shaped and degraded the natural landscape of the American West. These activities include: logging, mining, minerals exploration, oil and gas production, road building, military training, chemical and nuclear weapons manufacture and testing, waste disposal, water diversion, grazing, and motorized recreation.
The authors provide comprehensive discussions of the more significant environmental impacts of each of these activities; general scientific background for understanding the nature and interrelations of these impacts; and historical/political insights for understanding how these adverse environmental situations have developed through time. Each discussion attempts to provide an even-handed treatment of these complex and often controversial issues. Moreover, the book is very well documented. It includes a 23-page glossary of terms, a 25-page index, 45 pages of factual appendices, and 150 pages of clearly referenced footnotes. In summary, The American West at Risk is an excellent guide and text for the serious study of environmental issues in the western United States.

Yunus A. Cengel and Yunus Cengel, "Heat Transfer: A Practical Approach"

Ebook Download | Yunus A. Cengel and Yunus Cengel, "Heat Transfer: A Practical Approach" | This Book is much Better than any of the Other books out there as far as a GOOD Engineering reference for Heat Transfer. This Book is highly logical and very practical. The Author does not bog you down into the differential equations and boundary conditions, which is un necessary for 99% of all Heat Transfer work. Anwers to problems are not as needed when they have Detailed Examples with Step by step solutions for several problems each chapter. The person above will find a better appreciation for the book when he becomes a professional and doesn't have time to look at theory till you go blind. The book does do a Fair attempt at more then 1 dimensional Heat Transfer patterns and is an Excellent Resource for Theory and Application of all Types of Heat Transfer.

John Martis, "Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe: Representation and the Loss ofthe Subject"

Ebook Download | John Martis, "Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe: Representation and the Loss of the Subject" | This is the first full-length book in English on Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe, and will definitely be a valuable guide and companion for students and experts. If you are interested in Lacoue-Labarthe, but haven't yet or don't know how to start, this is a great way to go. Lacoue-Labarthe was one of the names on my list for the future, but even before I was halfway through the second chapter of Martis's book I was surfing the net looking for the best price for Typography. If you have already been initiated into the debates of contemporary philosophy you'll find Martis very engaging, illuminating and rewarding. And if you're interested in German romanticism, Kant, Hegel etc the book distils and clarifies many issues. When I first flicked through the book in the library I decided that I didn't want to spend much time on the chapter on Heidegger and Nazism, because there is so much more I want to learn about Heidegger. And that is precisely what Martis does in this chapter. Lastly, I recommend the other titles too in this series. The editors are doing a really laudable service to the philosophical community at large. I remember reading a while ago Edith Wyschogrod's book on Levinas. My attempt to get into Levinas by bypassing the commentaries was not very successful. Wyschogrod's book put me on the right track. Indispensable reading for those thinking about the subject of the Subject.
