Ebook Download | The Dementias: Diagnosis, Treatment, and Research | This book is definitely designed for clinicians, but in some ways is too basic for professionals who primarily work with dementia patients. However, the chapters on family, legal issues and particularly the chapter on environment are very useful. A good resource for a clinician new to treating dementia.

Ebook Download | Sam Kauffmann, "Avid Editing: A Guide for Beginning and Intermediate Users" (Fourth Edition) | Recently, I took a one week Avid Course at geniusDV and found Sam Kauffmann's book a welcome addition to what I learned in the course. Sam reviews all the basic operations that should get a beginner started; and it should be a valuable resource, as well, for the intermediate video editor who needs to look up a thing or two. Avid has an enormous amount of options of how to do things that can be overwhelming to the beginner. Sam offers a common sense basic approach that enable the beginner to edit successfully in a short time. The references he adds are helpful, especially after one grabs the basic concepts. Avid used to be the high-end editing application for Pros. It is becoming more available for consumers, and books like Sam Kauffmann's should accelerate that process.

Ebook Download | Color Atlas of Biochemistry | I don't understand why so many science texts are overwrought and redundant. Worst of all, you end up paying premium prices for poor content, circuitous writing, and an inefficient organization of topics. The real coup de grace comes about when instructors recommend student companion texts with a sly wink and a nudge.
Fortunately, resources like the 'Color Atlas of Biochemistry' are as affordable as they are efficient and useful. It will prove to be an invaluable reference, study aid, and a more adequate companion text than those offered by the more popular publishers.
Far be it from me to suggest that you hurt your instructor's coffers by using this book as a primary source, but it would certainly be a great addition to your library.

The sections devoted to the new features of ActionScript 3 are very useful and have thorough explanations with well documented code samples. I found the chapter on the new model for adding visual elements to a SWF via ActionScript using the Display List to be particularly helpful in my study of AS3.'
To sum up my thoughts on the ActionScript 3.0 Cookbook: Definitely a worth the cover price for experienced ActionScript developers but maybe not the ideal resource for those developers that are just learning programming for the Flash Platform.

Ebook Download | The Taming of Chance | This is a fascinating book, which charts the gradual development of statistical ideas in the nineteenth century, along with associated concepts, such as normalcy, chance, and determinism.
However, a few criticisms are in order. Hacking reports that there was a certain conceptual incoherence surrounding ideas relating to statistics in the 19th century, especially concerning ideas relating to determinism and chance. But I'm not quite sure that Hacking has been able to find the thread out of this confusion, as some confusions appear to remain rather resistant in spite of the narrative, which in general is admiringly clear.

I have lived in Japan for 14 years and I have come to view Japanese architecture in a different way. The author shows a real command of the subject and writes in a way that is enjoyable to read.
As an example, one of the subject buildings (Shofuku-ji) is a temple near my house and is the only official kokuho ("National Treasure") structure in the Tokyo area. Although a beautiful building, I was not able to appreciate why it was so recognized until I read the chapter in the book about it. The author was able to set the historical context and point out what makes it unique.

Ebook Download | JavaScript: The Missing Manual | I have David's CSS book and was waiting for this book to come out. I can understand one of the author's reservations about this book being jQuery specific, but if you stop to think of it, is also one of its strengths. There are "n" number of Javascript books out there which are pretty good, but do not take you beyond beginning/inermediate Javascript programming.
Realistically and practically, in order to get anything useful done in a reasonable amount of time, you have to use one of the frameworks. It could be jQuery, Prototype/Scripty, Dojo, Yahoo, any of these frameworks will do. The author has chosen to use jQuery which is an excellent choice.
Actually, my nitpicking is on the other side, i.e., the author should have left beginning Javascript material to any one of the other books and simply focused on Javascript with jQuery. His presentation style is very effective and he obviously knows CSS/Javascript world very well. Even better, he can communicate it equally well.
If you are beyond the introductory phase in CSS/Javascript world and are looking to build something useful beyond the toy pages, this book along with his CSS book becomes very useful. jQuery, without a doubt, is a superior framework. I prefer it to Prototype and Scriptaculous. I do not know Yahoo or Dojo so I cannot comment on them. I would buy other books from David again. In fact, I would love to see an "advanced" book where he brings together all of his knowledge and communication skills for creating "professional" web front-ends. Keep the same tutorial format though.

Ebook Download | CSS Pocket Reference: Visual Presentation for the Web | Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) is the W3C standard for the visual presentation of web pages, although it can be used in other situations too. The book begins with a short introduction to the basic concepts of CSS. What follows is an alphabetical reference to all CSS2.1 selectors, and finally an alphabetical reference to all CSS2.1 properties. This is a good handy reference once you understand CSS, but I wouldn't advise it as a sole source for novices. Instead, try "CSS: The Definitive Guide" in its latest edition for a very good all-round tutorial and reference. This book is for those occasions when you don't have time to go digging through the much larger "Definitive Guide" for short answers to questions.

Ebook Download | The Geography of Nowhere: The Rise and Decline of America's Man-Made Landscape | Geography of Nowhere is a wonderful, life-changing book. I wish I could make every developer, every SUV owner and every town council read this book. Its main topic is the physical environments that Americans live in, in contrast to our historical environments and to overseas. Kunstler shows how the advent of the automobile has changed the face of cities, small-towns and birthed the suburb. The choice to live without an automobile is now a very difficult one for most people, and also comes with certain social assumptions. Yet, after reading Geography of Nowhere, I am seeking ever more ways to take public transportation and reduce my reliance on a vehicle that both pollutes the natural environment and despoils the man-made environment. Some chapters in the book focus on cities gone wrong, such as Detroit. Others discuss the ideal community, involving mixed-use neighborhoods (both purpose - commercial, residential, industrial - and class - working, professional, wealthy). Kunstler makes the case that prior to the development of suburbia and the reign of automobiles as our primary form of transportation, we had a kinder, cleaner, and happier world. Disney World's Main Street was used as an example of how car-free neighborhoods have become an American dream, and at the same time, few people understand why cars have had such a negative effect.
Geography of Nowhere has confirmed my choice to live in a city with public transportation, in a mixed-use neighborhood, within walking distance of most of my needs. It may be more expensive and it may be unconventional, but I now have the evidence to back up my convictions.

Ebook Download | PHP in a Nutshell: A Desktop Quick Reference | The author's writing style is very easy to embrace, which makes reading this book a breeze. The author clearly knows PHP very well and provides many, many resourceful nuggets of experience in the paragraphical excursion through this insightful book. It "reads" well and "references" well-enough.
While this book may not be the best tutorial for a total newcomer to programming languages, for anyone with experience in any modern programming language, it should be very easily read and received. How much of this is the writer's style versus O'Reilly's "common sense in book layout?" I'm not sure, but the two blend together well to make a fine wine in PHP In A Nutshell.
The section on databases is well worth the asking price, but I found way more than that to be of real, immediate value to my "emerging" PHP skills. However, perhaps like the other reviewer, I'd like to have a nice little appendix that contrasts the "C" or "Java" way of doing something to the PHP way of doing it as an added benefit that would negate the need for a massive index. Indexing is nearly a lost art today, it seems...only library sciences majors seem to know the first thing about it while the rest of us rely on our word processing software and some manual hacking of its results.
While the section on Manipulating Images is really fantastic for content, somehow the "smooth, blue gradient" looses its luster when reduced to gray scale. Yeah, I realize that something has to bite the bullet to be competitive in today's market, but blue skies in grayscale? Oh well, the book is still very excellent and useful. It is the first thing I reach for when I need PHP help. Perhaps someone with hardcore PHP experience may point out flaws that I'd miss, but for a programmer getting going in PHP, I've found it to be a massive, err...in a light and easy way, help!

Ebook Download | The High Price of Materialism | Great book. Can't say enough good things about it. Kasser breaks down materialism and the effects it has on society. It talks about its effects on one's mental and physical health, how it effects relationships and how it ultimately effects the environment. It is academic, but not so much that someone without a psychology background can't understand it. I didn't find it dry at all like one reader said it was. I was entertained and informed (what a rare combination these days.)
In the final chapter he provides things inviduals and communities can do to fight back against the rampant materialism we're constantly assaulted with and how fighting it will help improve our lives, the lives of the ones we love and the world in general. Make the author happy and check the book out from a library or borrow a copy from a friend.

The challenge of relativity is left to the ideas and not the equations--though the author does not shy away from explaining the mathematics of the theory with equations and diagrams. The book is also logically organized to facilitate understanding of the sequence of phenomena and research that guided Einstein. If all physics texts were like this one, there would be far more scientists around.

Ebook Download | Enterprise Security with EJB and CORBA(r) | Up to now, this book is unique in its kind, as it really covers the security aspects of distributed applications as we see them more and more these days. The authors do not only cover (very new) technologies and standards from the domain of EJB and CORBA, they also make us aware of their integration with legacy systems and network security. I liked the way they try to pass their knowledge and experience to the reader. Despite the fact that it is written by three persons, the book is of a consistent style. An example application serves troughout the book to explain the coved topics. Altough it is a small and simple application (real world is tougher...), it shows amazingly well what problems have to be dealt with in the enterprise. The book won't give you answers to all your question, but will certainly help to find your own. I recommend it reading from cover to cover, later chapters do refer to earlier ones. Definitely a useful book!

Ebook Download | The Demon Haunted World | Demon Haunted World should be required reading for any first year college student. It is astonishing how many people get through four or five years of higher education without having developed the ability to think critically.
The lack of critical thinking in this country has real consequences. It is the reason that the anchormen on the national news can't convey a story about a scientific or medical topic in a meaningful way. It's the reason that you meet well-educated parents these days who are more concerned about side effects from vaccinations than about the lethal diseases being vaccinated against. It's the reason that parents believe treating their children's depression is more likely to lead to suicide than leaving it untreated. It's the reason the majority of voters in this country voted to elect a President who openly confesses to having a concrete interpretation of the world. Think about that for a second. We have come to the point where adults fail to recognize that seeing things in black and white, all good versus all evil, is a sign of stunted emotional and intellectual development, not a skill to be bragged about. We live in a time when the media tells us that being balanced means presenting peoples opinions from both sides of the political spectrum, as opposed to challenging the statements from an evidence-based, rational perspective.
I love Carl Sagan, I highly recommend this book, and I highly recommend all of his writings.

Lang, "Linear Algebra" | It is the rare sort of book that makes an excellent introduction for the student and useful reference for the graduate, and that is why I recommend this book unreservedly. Its conciseness may leave some students adrift, but I think it serves to enhance the book's structural coherence. And while the given proofs are usually terse, I think that makes the book a wonderful way to measure one's prepardness for upper level studies. Linear algebra is the ideal subject with which to familiarize students with rigorous proof techniques because it has so many easily visualized yet useful examples. If one cannot understand Lang's proofs here, one is probably not ready to tackle an upper level course in, say, algebra or topology. This book therefore serves as a proving grounds, so to speak (and excuse the pun!), for one's mathematical ability. Survive the test and you'll probably do well in your upper level studies, otherwise you should practice some more and try again.

Ebook Download | PICAXE Microcontroller Projects for the Evil Genius | Mr. Hackett did a fine job on this book. It is well written, very illustrative (although the publisher could have lightened a number of the illustrations, many were very dark and you had to squint), and follows a very nice outline.
What impresses me the most, besides the thoroughness of the programming information, is the design suggestions that he made. I have, since I was 10 years old (I still have that first breadboard 25 years later), been a breadboarder. I have built and modified many circuits on breadboards. It is a valuable skill, one that can only come from experience... but it can also get tedious. That's why I really like the development boards that are available. I have been using a PICAXE development board (google AXE091) for a few days and really enjoy it, and highly recommend it. It's also why I REALLY like the Arduino with the associated shields for it. But what impresses me with this book is Mr. Hackett's stripboard techniques. First you breadboard a peripheral (LED display, switch, etc) and then, since it is something you will likely use again and again, you can save time in the future by making a stripboard version that plugs into your breadboard. Very nice. But even that can get tedious after a while... so guess what? When you have developed that particular skill, and want to save time, you can actually purchase professionally etched PC boards from his website to make some of these peripherals.

Ebook Download | Microsoft XNA Game Studio 2.0: Learn Programming Now! | I got this book at Barnes & Noble, so it was the 'newer version' without the CD or the promise thereof. It wasn't a problem at all for me, as everything is very easy to access online...and I'd prefer to buy the book at a cheaper cost and download the software than pay extra for a CD. The content, at least the part that I've read is very informative for a newbie programmer like me. I'm only on Chapter 3, but if you're already experienced in C#, this book might not be for you. Everything is clearly explained, and the length of the book is perfect - long enough to be thorough, but not so long to be intimidating. Highly recommended.

Ebook Download | The Quantum Beat: Principles and Applications of Atomic Clocks | There are excellent books discussing time at a level accessible for the general reader (e.g. Empires of Time, by Anthony Aveni). The Quantum Beat is the only one I've seen that gives a thorough discussion of the basics and then goes on to give an incredibly lucid discussion of all the minute details involved in making more and more accurate clocks. He elaborates on the pluses and minuses of each new development, from the sundial to the pendulum clock to the quartz crystal clock to the atomic clock. He also outlines the directions currently being pursued -- clocks based on a single atom held in an atom trap. The book will have special appeal to those who know about physics, crystals or engineering, and it should make fascinating reading for any educated layperson. Major was a key figure in the development of atomic clocks and has produced an exhilarating book describing their importance and the incredible technological efforts that went into their development.

Ebook Download | Special Edition Using Visual C 6 | This book presents exactly what the title and cover information purport: Using VC++ 6 on an advanced beginner-intermediate level. Covers all the BASICS of developing Win apps. For example, while it mentions the SDK API, covers database fundamentals, and provides a good intro to COM, it does NOT repeat the MS SDK reference, go into strategic enterprise-wide database development, or become an intimate, bit-busting dissection of COM, all of which are obviously topics which require a minimum of another complete volume. It provides a broad, no-holes coverage of VC++: a good foundation on which one can build more complex specifics. Does get repetitious about step-by-step and wizards, evidently so that it may be used as a simple single-chapter cookbook, and therefore does not offer any consolidated challenges. As a comprehensive, hold-your-hand intro for developing reasonable proficiency in navigating around VC++, while providing enough of a glimpse into the details behind the scenes for understanding some of the big picture, one gets exactly what is advertised.

Ebook Download | Ivor Horton's Beginning Visual C 2008 | I have used Ivor Horton's books on Visual C++ since Beginning Visual C++ 4 and this latest book conforms to the very high standard set by the previous books.
First of all, the book is written for the IDE(s) provided and not the other way round. This book covers the ISO/ANSI standard C++ and the Microsoft extension C++/CLI, together with the Standard Template Library, in the first 11 chapters. Windows Programming is introduced in Chapter 12 and covers both MFC and Windows Forms.
Now, if you want to go down the traditional game Programming route, then Win32 and Standard C++ is what you will need, together with DirectX or OpenGL at a later stage. The book covers all the C++ you will need for that. However, should you want something for business applications, together with a graphics capability and a rich GUI, then that is covered also with Windows Forms and, although I have never used it, presumably Visual Studio Express is perfectly adequate for this exercise. A problem emerges if you have used and want to continue using MFC, since these classes are not part of the Express version. Presumably, Microsoft considered that those who would want to use MFC have done so in previous versions of Visual Studio and would simply upgrade to, at least, the 2008 Standard version.
The fact remains, however, that this book covers Windows Forms, and all that you could do with the MFC can be done as well, if not a lot better, with Forms. And since the Express version contains Windows Forms, it is difficult to imagine there being any problem with reaching project objectives. Having said that, I would like to conclude by saying that this is a truly excellent work, and it is very difficult to see how this beginning text could be improved upon, even by Wrox standards.

Ebook Download | Mastering Windows 2000 Programming With Visual C | However, reading the book has been fairly unsatisfactory. The author doesnt seem to know whether his reader is a beginning C++ programmer who unfamiliar with Windows programming, or whether his reader is an experienced developer, well-exposed to MFC and Visual C++. "Windows 2000 for Dummies" to snippets of MFC code that are near useless without installing and reviewing the full code that come on the CD, and probably incomprehensible to a novice.

Ebook Download | Stepping Twice into the River | John King, as a retired English Professor, wrote here a classic gem of a travel book. It blends his deep reading and understanding of the geology and history of a seemingly drab and neglected region while slowly traveling the length of the Sheyenne River in North Dakota. He provides accurate observations and interesting encounters with natives not always at their best. With his heartfelt fondness for the region and sadness over the inexorable depopulation hitting this area as with the entire North American center he philosophizes on the greater things touching all mortals struggling to live fully awake on earth. He ends his reflections often on ironic tones of ambiguity which as a reader you will find yourself looking forward to and smiling inwardly. As a conscientious teacher of English and poet he exhibits outstanding literary craftsmanship, invoking spot-on local odd little speech inflections and word choices. Since I'm from the area I know I'll be returning often to this book to review his geological and historical understandings - outshining much larger and boring volumes. People not from this area can learn about a real trip down a small North Dakota river; but even more, all can learn how a classic travel book should be crafted. You will never believe the surprise ending!

You will need to bring your knowledge of the Western Canon and contemporary philosophy with you in order to fully appreciate this text. Its division into books I and II enables regular science fiction readers to access straight forward reviews in Book II.
Expect to learn from this book and don't expect him to enshrine SF into the Western Canon but rather to provide you with an understanding the zeitgeist of the history of the genre and ourselves. Authors reviewed range from Dick to Robinson, Brunner to Le Guin. With a focus on utopianism and dystopia the subjects covered are sex and society, aliens and psychoanalyst, and the motifs and mechanics of this writing field.

I find Dr Ramnarayan Chattopadhyay'e book on advanced surface engineering very informative and useful in many practical ways. With my four decades of experience, initially with leading organizations/ institutions, and finally running a successful business in UK and India, I strongly recommend this book to all those engaged in surface engineering activities. I have a Ph.D. in Metallurgy and would recommend this book as a starting point for research students wishing to explore new frontiers.

Ebook Download | Mars, A Cosmic Stepping Stone | Excellent book. Beautiful color images. Kevin Nolan does a good job describing the need for Mars to be our stepping stone for exploration and colonizing. He has a good descriptive writing style. Some interesting tech talk but not too deep. Not a kids book but you don't need a degree in astronomy or "planetology" either. Easy to follow. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the expansion of the human race. Hope this book implants a little "A need to go to Mars" to readers. This book answers some questions on Mars colonization and finding life but thankfully opens up many more for thought and study. Most of the book maybe a little difficult or dry for young readers but parents can show their children the beautiful images and read some of the less technical passages to their young children. Both will enjoy this book.

Ebook Download | Sams Teach Yourself Database Programming with Visual C 6 in 21 Days | This is a great book if you have MFC programming experience but very little database knowledge. It's as if the book was written for me. It's easy to read and it's a great introduction to database programming. You'll learn about SQL, ODBC, OLE DB, ADO, etc. I'll admit that I used to get mind-boggled by this "acronymic hell", but this book gives a great overview and everything finally makes sense. It helps if you have some understanding of COM (ie: what it is and what it's for), but it's not required as it's covered in later chapters. The author presents pros and cons of many different database technologies and provides clear programming examples. Obviously the other reviewers that complained about the examples didn't bother *reading* the book. Some of the examples require that you modify the code depending on where you've installed the sample files. However, these guys probably thought they could learn everything about database programming by cutting and pasting the example code into their programs. I would think that if you're going to buy a book, you should seriously consider reading what's inside...especially if you intend to add "database programmer" to your resume.

Ebook Download | Visual C++ 6 from the Ground Up | The first part of the book is a verbose introduction to Visual C++. The second part focuses on ADO and ODBC database topics. The next one-third of the book focuses on Internet related topics, from designing a web page, through basic JavaScript, and finishes on IIS (Microsoft Internet Information Server). Later, Mueller delves into security issues. Next, Mueller explores creating help files, and HTML help files (this part of the book is worth its weight in gold). The last part focuses on packaging your application for distribution. While I can't deny that this book contains a lot of great information (once you get past the verbose introduction), it doesn't do what it sets out be-- an all-inclusive tutorial on Visual C++.

It is true that this text is not suitable for the novice looking for an introduction to the field. However, for those who already understand the basic principles and concepts, this book is an invaluable tool. My graduate students love it, and I find it to be among the best of its kind.

It assesses the whole body, making CNS and Head and Neck comprising almost half of the book. Organ systems are evaluated, with lesions classified by location, configuration, density, calcification and enhancement pattern among others. The format does follow the classic tome written by Dr. Eisenberg. The ultrasound differential diagnosis textbook in this series is also highly recommended. The MRI differential book is not up to par of its brethen, however. This book should be available near all CT reading monitor.
