Cinematic game secrets for creative directors and producers: Inspiredtechniques from industry legends

Ebook Download | Cinematic game secrets for creative directors and producers: Inspired techniques from industry legends | Rather than reviewing my own book (of course I'm gonna give it five stars!), I'd rather tell you why I think you should buy my book. I have five reasons--all of them good. Here we go...
1. As a new/aspiring producer or creative director, it's important to know what it takes to make a new, successful game. In a word, it's making your game 'cinematic.' In more words, it means have a great story, compelling characters, and using sound cinematography techniques. There are chapters on all three of these subjects in the book.
2. You are studying game development/production. What do you know about filmmaking? Probably what you've seen on a few 'behind the scenes' DVD features and read in an 'independent' filmmaking book or two. Not only are aspects of filmmaking covered in my book--it's only the aspects that are relevant to you! And they're explained in that context.
3. Building cross-market appeal. You don't want to just create a game. You want to create a sensation! Books, movies, toys, etc. should be following in the wake of your title's success. How do these deals get made? By creating a truly cinematic game that grabs gamers and has mass popular appeal. Read the book to learn more!
4. You want to be independent. Lets face it, most game development is done as a form of insider trading. Programmers, artists...well, pretty much everyone...are all considered 'contractors' nowadays and jump from project to project, studio to studio, etc. It's all who you know. So you're going to create your own game. My book has chapters on independent game production, as well as making your game...You guessed it: Cinematic!
5. Finally, and lets face it, this is the best reason...The book rocks! It's basic in its approach, but technical when it needs to be. If you're a student, you're going to learn a lot about applying great techniques to your own personal production model. If you're a seasoned vet, you'll get more tools for the 'ole toolbelt. And don't forget, you're getting advice from some true masters of the game industry in this volume: Warren Spector, Noah Falstein, and Richard Rouse III just to name a few!

Creative sequencing techniques for music production

Ebook Download | Creative sequencing techniques for music production | When I first got this book, I was skeptical as to how helpful it would be to learn about four different sequencers at the same time - what a surprise to discover that this is the most useful book I've ever read on Digital Performer, let alone sequencing. It helped to clarify many features in DP that I didn't understand or took for granted, because I was able to see how the other sequencers tackled the same problems. Reading this book reminds me of how I never really understood English grammar until I began to study Spanish and Italian!

The Shape of Content: Creative Writing in Mathematics and Science

Ebook Download | The Shape of Content: Creative Writing in Mathematics and Science | Over a few recent days I've been sampling from THE SHAPE OF CONTENT and it has supplied ongoing delight. I began with the collection's poetry and with names familiar to me--Robin Chapman, Chandler Davis, and Emily Grosholz. Liking what I found I went further and found Adam Dickinson and others. Turning to longer pieces, I met Eric Neville through the well-written prose of Marjorie Senechal. I was drawn in by the mathematical fiction of Manil Suri and Alex Kasman. And there is more, much more. For all readers who have connections to mathematics, this collection of creative work is a treasure to be oft-visited and enjoyed.

Mathematics & Common Sense: A Case of Creative Tension

Ebook Download | Mathematics & Common Sense: A Case of Creative Tension | Professor Davis provides 33 short essays covering the tension between commonsense and the often counterintuitive discoveries of mathematics. I particularly enjoyed his discussions of why counting large numbers is impossible (with interesting implications for elections), the sorites paradox (e.g. how many grains of wheat do you have to have before you have a heap of wheat?), and the virtues of inconsistency. There is also lots of good material here on meta-mathematical issues such as what constitutes reasons, proofs, and solutions.
Davis's clear writing and sense of humor, known to those familiar with his popular books "Thomas Gray: Philosopher Cat" and "The Thread," comes through in these more technical essays as well. My only quibbles with the book are that it would have benefited from a good proof-reading and it confuses Professor James Moriarty, the arch-villain of Sherlock Holmes, with his brother Colonel James Moriarty. Don't let this minor mistake cause you to miss this fine book!
