Reflections and Replies: Essays on the Philosophy of Tyler Burge

Ebook Download | Reflections and Replies: Essays on the Philosophy of Tyler Burge | Burge is a very influential philosopher, but I think the importance of his work has still to be fully appreciated. The essays in this volume concentrate on his main contribution to contemporary Philosophy, anti-individualism. Burge developed this view building on work, e.g., by Putnam and Kripke; his contribution lies, on one hand, in extending from language to thought the idea that content is determined by relations external to the individual, and, on the other hand, in highlighting external factors beyond causal relations, such as the community one is part of. The volume contains twelve essays by very good authors (e.g. Peacocke, Donnellan, Block, Dretske, Chomsky) and a thorough reply to each by Burge.
The exchanges are not at all ritual, and they provide often good examples of well-informed, animated debate. I suggest this book to anyone having an interest in Philosophy.
