Invitation to Dynamical Systems

Ebook Download | Invitation to Dynamical Systems | I used this book in 1995 for a math course in dynamical systems. It was mind-blowing to see how good and useful this book was. We used another textbook (Robert Devaney's "Intro to chaotic dynamical systems") - which was also very good, but this one was really instrumental in allowing me to learn the material on my own. It was great as a textbook, great for supplementary reading, and I still consult it from time to time when I need to refresh my memory. Scheinermann takes the reader by the hand and walks him through tons of relevant problems and examples. You have no choice but to learn lots from reading this book. The writing style is entertaining, human and never boring. He points out the important stuff, potential pitfalls, etc. It's really great. He even has an appendix on how to write Matlab, Mathematica and C programs to compute dynamical systems behavior, fractal sets, etc. I was amazed, as an undergraduate in 1995, to see how much I could program using Turbo C (at the time), without much prior training. The book was well ahead of its time, and is still quite current. I can't recommend this book enough. This is the book if you want to learn fast.

Methamphetamine Use: Clinical and Forensic Aspects

Ebook Download | Methamphetamine Use: Clinical and Forensic Aspects | Recreational users often do not believe that all it takes is one event to change their lives forever and sometimes that event occurs the first and only time Methamphetamine is used. The authors are not stodgy: it is clearly stated herein that Cannabis is not a concern. What is written here is the truth and it is a truth that recreational users and cookers will deny, as all substance abusers can only continue the abuse when they are in denial of truth. This is the same mechanism in alcoholics as it is in tweakers: as perception becomes progressively distorted by repeated insults to the brain, the lens through which reality is "seen" becomes something akin to a broken mirror.
I've learned to identify former abusers by certain characteristics: a certain type of obesity more often seen in women, who imagined that being twenty pounds overweight was the primary reason they were not attractive, when in fact they were attractive from an exterior point of reference. Far less attractive is a needy and self-deprecating personality in a slightly chubby body, but when someone has convinced themselves that attractiveness is defined in terms of quantity rather than quality it is very difficult to deliver the message to one who has already chosen what appears to be the easy path.

Concrete Mathematics: A Foundation for Computer Science

Ebook Download | Concrete Mathematics: A Foundation for Computer Science | This is one of those books you keep forever, purely for its utility: it's packed with formulas, techniques, examples. But more than that, the authors lead you through the techniques and explain the concepts behind them, with the goal of equipping you with the mental tools to attack any mathematical problem you encounter. And to top it off, it's well-written, and the "margin notes" provide some comic relief. The material is very dense, and it's not a book I'd recommend for casual reading: this is stuff you only work through if you're going to need it. But if you *are* going to need it, this book will make it a lot more pleasant.

CHESS • Challenging the Grunfeld by Edward Dearing (2005)

Ebook Download | CHESS • Challenging the Grunfeld by Edward Dearing (2005) | A true Rosetta Stone for unlocking the mysteries of how White maintains (or tries to !) an advantage in the highly theoretical Rb1 lines of the Modern Exchange variation. Well formatted, peppered with pithy comments and (including the chapter titles themselves), and crammed full of concrete analysis to back up assessments made by the author.
In such a volatile line as the Grunfeld, there are sure to be micro improvements and novelties found-a-plenty since its publication, but the underpinnings and foundational knowledge of this very specific line are so well detailed here that this book will be relevent for much longer than most other opening books. In that line, it seems to be in keeping with other efforts from this publisher, (Vigorito's Challenging the Nimzo & Marin's epic tomes on Open games and the Spanish) all of which seem to be aimed at a higher (rating-wise) market than their leading competitors.
To be certain, it is more analysis than prose heavy, but the narrative contained is as clear as it is concise, providing ample verbage for the rhetorically hungry strategist. I applaud their efforts, and hope Pinski's next book on the mercurial King's Gambit delivers the goods as well as he did here.

RSS and Atom: Understanding and Implementing Content Feeds andSyndication

Ebook Download | RSS and Atom: Understanding and Implementing Content Feeds and Syndication | The book has an excellent perspective. The author seems to look at the technologies to some degree from the perspective of market opportunity, which I like. Additionally, his language is both erudite and accessible; no small feat. All in all, an excellent resource if you need a briefing on this topic.
