Chess Mazes by Bruce Alberston • Volume 1 (2004)

Ebook Download | Chess Mazes by Bruce Alberston • Volume 1 (2004) | One of the basic chess skills that needs to be developed is visualization. You look at a position, think about where you should move a piece, what your opponent's reply might be and then go on to analyze the position that your mind's eye "sees." This book helps develop this precise skill.
It does it by setting up a position with black pieces on one side and just ONE white piece. The reader is then told to move the white piece to a certain square without landing, in transit, on any square controlled by an enemy piece, and to do so in the shortest number of moves. The student, particularly new beginners, may initially find it difficult to solve the puzzle without moving actual pieces around the board. However, when the puzzle -- the "chess maze" -- can be successfully solved without any pieces being moved, the student is well on the way to develop critical skills for playing better chess.
A book (and the next in the series, Chess Mazes 2) well worth the time for beginners and "lower" intermediate players. Also may be productively used by instructors working with students.

CHESS • Challenging the Grunfeld by Edward Dearing (2005)

Ebook Download | CHESS • Challenging the Grunfeld by Edward Dearing (2005) | A true Rosetta Stone for unlocking the mysteries of how White maintains (or tries to !) an advantage in the highly theoretical Rb1 lines of the Modern Exchange variation. Well formatted, peppered with pithy comments and (including the chapter titles themselves), and crammed full of concrete analysis to back up assessments made by the author.
In such a volatile line as the Grunfeld, there are sure to be micro improvements and novelties found-a-plenty since its publication, but the underpinnings and foundational knowledge of this very specific line are so well detailed here that this book will be relevent for much longer than most other opening books. In that line, it seems to be in keeping with other efforts from this publisher, (Vigorito's Challenging the Nimzo & Marin's epic tomes on Open games and the Spanish) all of which seem to be aimed at a higher (rating-wise) market than their leading competitors.
To be certain, it is more analysis than prose heavy, but the narrative contained is as clear as it is concise, providing ample verbage for the rhetorically hungry strategist. I applaud their efforts, and hope Pinski's next book on the mercurial King's Gambit delivers the goods as well as he did here.

CHESS • Play the Sicilian Dragon by Edward Dearing (2004)

Ebook Download | CHESS • Play the Sicilian Dragon by Edward Dearing (2004) | This book is a great work and probably your best shot at learning the Dragon. However, one small disclaimer. The book does take a 'tree format' rather that showing complete games. In such a very sharp opening like the Dragon, this is probably the best way to learn it, but, as the author admits 'is less enjoyable for the reader'.
Another thing that you should know about the book is that dragon lines often will 'come under a cloud due' to a strong line found by white. So, a repetoire book about the dragon can easily go out of date (as many have). However, while 'Play the Sicilian Dragon' is a repetoire book, the author has wisely added extra variations in case he thinks white's play could be inproved in a certain line that he recommends, leaving the reader with a useful alternative in case the variation that he recommends turns out to be bad.
