Theodore Roosevelt Abroad: Nature, Empire, and the Journey of anAmerican President

Ebook Download | Theodore Roosevelt Abroad: Nature, Empire, and the Journey of an American President | Throughout Theodore Roosevelt's well-chronicled life, we see a man on a quest to make a difference in the world. Each set of circumstances and events whether political, physical, or personal, seems to point to a future, setting in motion another set of events. Such is the case with the time immediately following TR's Presidency.
Embarking on an extended safari in Africa with the aim of collecting specimens for the Natural History Museum, TR spends several months shooting large game and small game. Always an adventurer, he was able to combine his love of hunting with his desire to categorize and display African animals in the United States. Supported partly by Andrew Carnegie and desire for World Peace, TR dedicates himself to learning more about African animals as well as the general culture of Africa. Following the safari, TR travels throughout Europe, speaking on various topics, and working to establish World Peace and empirical order.
This marvelous volume uses a mixture of quotes and events to demonstrate how the complexities of American politics worked to catapult TR back into the political machinations of the time. Following his 18 months in Africa and Europe, TR returned to the United States, ran for President again, and in essence placed Woodrow Wilson in the Oval Office. Encouraged by friends, but against his own instincts, to discredit Taft, TR felt compelled to run against Taft in favor of his own views on the world and on conservation.
Yet this book is not about the subsequent election, but simply examines TR's journey prior to the election. Although rather brief, the book is comprehensive, well-written, and energetic. We join TR in the hunts and we share in his speeches about the nature of governments and the people. Aside from some quick detail that was difficult to understand chronologically (perhaps a time line supplement in the book would be helpful), the book fills in the missing gaps of the journey demonstrating TR's remarkable energy and fortitude. Highly recommended for historians and naturalists.
