The Unknowable (Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science)

Ebook Download | The Unknowable (Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Computer Science) | Chaitin is not a modest writer, but then given his personal contribution to the field he discusses here, there's no reason why he should be. This book is not an easy read for the layperson (I know, I am one) but does reward perseverance. The beauty of "The Unknowable" is that it allows the reader to understand the points Chaitin makes by working through the important proofs by famous thinkers such as Godel and Turing (and ,of course, Chaitin). It's a great feeling to walk in the footsteps of giants such as these - and to understand the conlusions rather than accept them as received wisdom. My only reservation is that the chapter introducing the reader to LISP is fairly dense and tough to follow. However I found that reading the first couple of chapters of Friedman and Felleisen's "Little LISPer" made it more comprehensible - and LL is a great book anyway. I'd thoroughly recommend this book to readers with an interest in the Philosophy of Mathematics who do not necessarily have an in-depth mathematical background.

The Hacker's dictionary: A guide to the world of computer wizards

Ebook Download | The Hacker's dictionary: A guide to the world of computer wizards | I bought this thin book in late 1983 when I was at the University of Minnesota getting my degree in Computer Science.
Many of the terms I had been using; some I had heard from my older brother (who was part of the Southern California hacker culture that spawned this book).
I'd come across word that seemed perfect to fit into my everyday conversations. On the blank pages at the end of the book, I scribbled some cuspy additional definitions that midwest hackers had been using but weren't part of the California (or MIT) lexicon. My copy has come apart at the binding from repeatedly thumbing through it for almost 30 years.

Harmony for Computer Musicians

Ebook Download | Harmony for Computer Musicians | This an excellent book for those seeking out a modern text on harmony that illustrates chordal and harmonic relationships in a `Piano Roll" midi style input suitable for playing back in a sequencer such as SONAR, CUBASE etc. It also treats modulation and modal harmony.
Many samples illustrated in the book are on a companion CD. If you're a computer musician this text is a definite 'must have'.

3D Game Engine Design: A Practical Approach to Real-Time ComputerGraphics

Ebook Download | 3D Game Engine Design: A Practical Approach to Real-Time Computer Graphics | 3D Game Engine Programming is a 850-paged guide to constructing a modular, functional video game engine. This reference was one of the biggest reasons I became confident that I could complete a project of my own and has helped me tremendously in the design and building of an engine based upon the fundamentals of the ZFX Engine.
Even though the book does not go into detail and provide the code to all the bells and whistles of a commerical engine, it certainly outlines the basics and even provides code for testing. (I personally liked not having everything provided so that I could add my own features with a more personalized touch). In particular, the text guides the reader through the concepts and code needed to construct an engine that has the ability to support both DirectX and OpenGL (though DirectX is the main focus in the text), Vertex and Pixel Shaders (which is a big plus in upcoming game graphics!), and networkable players. In addition, the book brought extra possibilities such as Non-Player Characters, AI, and other various effects to the table for the reader to take note of where they could be added on to the engine. More importantly, he did do an excellent job of keeping these options open without forcing his more ambitious readers to reprogram half the engine.
A very important thing I felt was the key to why I liked it some much was the fact that I understood how the components of the engine worked individually and as a whole to construct a functional game when I had finished the book. So many times have I read a programming book cover to cover and then still be lost on how everything fits together outside of the demos provided in the text-- but this book was NOT like that at all. The concepts were presented clearly as well as explicitly outlined within the code. So, if you are looking for a book that hits the ground running, providing a complete archive of source code and demos in an effort to construct a comprehensive game engine: this book is for you!

Computer graphics and geometric modeling

Ebook Download | Computer graphics and geometric modeling | This book is a valuable reference for programmers that want a good introduction to geometric modeling. The book provides enough material to allow you to write many programs dealing with the covered topics. The algorithms outlined in the book are general. They can be adapted to a wide variety of problems, but you must fill in the details. Also, depending on your needs, you may need to consult more advanced books.

Computer Forensics: Investigating Data & Image Files (1st Edition)

Ebook Download | Computer Forensics: Investigating Data & Image Files (1st Edition) | I'm currently using this book for a graduate digital media forensics course that's part of my Master in Computer Forensics program at George Mason University. I've only done lab #2 (there are 5 labs) from this book so far, but I'm hoping it gets better- at least the book is a start. My class utilizes the Cengage companion website for this book, which provides downloads for the tools to be used in the labs. The tools used in lab 2 are DD (for windows), FTK, Mount image pro, R-Drive & Save-n-Synch. As soon as I installed DD, I had a random .DLL error on both my XP & Win & virtual machines. I tried hunting down the .DLL and adding it to the path and directory and still had issues. Eventually I just tracked down an open source DD for windows and it worked fine. For a lab book, you want all of your tools to be working correctly so you can work on the lab in a successful manor.

Computer Forensics JumpStart

Ebook Download | Computer Forensics JumpStart | There is no question that computer security and the preservation and recovery of digital data in cases where there is potential malfeasance is a valuable skill. It is also an area that requires a great deal of technical expertise, as even an inappropriate bit among billions being altered can lead to a failure. The computer that may contain the important data must have the digital contents copied in a "pure" manner and then the computer containing the memory must be stored away as evidence. Even the volatile data in the RAM may have to be archived for examination.
This book is at best a primer on how to perform computer forensics, while it does explain what the field is to those with computer experience; in many ways you get only enough information to make yourself dangerous. The fundamentals of extracting data from computers as well as a list of some of the court-approved tools is covered, but not to any depth where a person could read about them and then use them effectively. By effectively, I mean well enough to be considered an expert witness in court. The contents of this book should be considered as only a first step in several composing a journey to where you can justifiably be considered an expert in digital forensics. If kept within those parameters, then this book is a good place to begin your studies.

Mathematics for 3D Game Programming and Computer Graphics

Ebook Download | Mathematics for 3D Game Programming and Computer Graphics | This book is great. Its material is well explained, the topics covered are complete (for the most part), and the examples make sense. It is a fantastic reference that should be on the shelf of any professional game programmer or aspiring game programmer. However, this book isn't a hand holding guide to making "cool" games, as some reviewers expected it to be. There is no single book for that. There are so many topics to cover, it would be impossible to put them all into one text. Please don't be fooled by reviews from non-professionals, as this book is a must have. For a list of beginner books to give yourself an introduction to game programming.

The Art of Computer Programming, Volume 4A: Combinatorial Algorithms,Part 1

Ebook Download | The Art of Computer Programming, Volume 4A: Combinatorial Algorithms, Part 1 | Knuth has written many books considered classics. Some of the previous works have been set-up for where the real fun is - Combinatorics. In one of my own columns, I say "Never trust the brute-force power of a computer network to do the job of a combinatorialist." In 1967, John P. Robinson and Arthur J. Bernstein published an optimal Golomb ruler with 24 marks (OGR24). Their solution was confirmed in 2004 by a massive distributed effort using tens of thousand of computer years.
Knuth is attempting to discuss all the algorithms that will still be important 50 years from now. The amount of speed given using these algorithms is staggering. Some examples topics in the book:
Page 222 - Algorithm S: Breadth-first synthesis of BDDs
Page 293 - Balanced and Complementary Gray codes.
Page 424 - Stirling numbers and set partitions.
Page 449 - Generating binary trees

Helpful mathematical illustrations feature prominently throughout the book, and pretty much every page is gorgeously formatted. Knuth developed TeX in part to produce beautiful books, and that is on display here. Many thoughtful questions are provided as an aid to learning these very useful techniques. The Answers section runs for 303 pages. It will take me months or years to digest most the information in this work, but I can't imagine a better presentation for this difficult but lucratively useful material.

Concrete Mathematics: A Foundation for Computer Science

Ebook Download | Concrete Mathematics: A Foundation for Computer Science | This is one of those books you keep forever, purely for its utility: it's packed with formulas, techniques, examples. But more than that, the authors lead you through the techniques and explain the concepts behind them, with the goal of equipping you with the mental tools to attack any mathematical problem you encounter. And to top it off, it's well-written, and the "margin notes" provide some comic relief. The material is very dense, and it's not a book I'd recommend for casual reading: this is stuff you only work through if you're going to need it. But if you *are* going to need it, this book will make it a lot more pleasant.

Blogging For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Ebook Download | Blogging For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) | I found this book to be accessible, complete, well-organized, and entertaining. Brad Hill's conversational style reminds me of David Pogue - it's like having your funny, fast-talking, slashdot.org-loving techie best friend tell you what to do - a good thing for me, but might not suit people who prefer more technical guidebooks.
In the author's intro, he goes over the chapters and tells readers what they can skip depending on their level of technical expertise and blog ambition (getting a blog hosted vs. installing the blog software yourself, for example). I'm pretty computer literate (enough so that I was slightly embarassed when I bought the book - it's my first in the "For Dummies" series). I've done a lot of desktop publishing and typesetting, but am a newbie at Web page building. This book was written simply, but was definitely appropriate for my skill level - I read it in a day, and had my blog site set up the day after. I appreciated the simple language, bullet points, and many screenshots.
Other notable features: Hill has separate chapters for each of the major blog services (MSN, Typepad, Movabletype, WordPress), and the information presented is up-to-date (very important for the blog services that updated their software recently). Overall, it's a good choice for beginners in Web site building. Those with some experience who for some reason ignored the title of this book should opt for something in a more specialized series - one that doesn't cover everything from blogging and yoga - like the Visual Quickstart series.
